C4D R13 Kinect Character Template
I started playing around with Kinect mocap in Cinema 4D a little over a month ago. It’s pretty fun. It has it’s limitations for sure but still could prove useful on certain projects. One thing that bothered me was the time it took setting up a rig and connecting it to the data that Ni-Mate creates. So I created this template to make it easier and I must say the character object is pretty cool and creating your own templates aren’t that difficult. I reversed engineered one the built-in character templates to understand how they work and watched one of Bret Bay’s Cineversity videos to help answer a few questions I had. Then, I built my own template. Hope you guys find it useful.
Download the Character Template here: Ni_MateRig_JJohnson_419.c4d Install it into your library > characters folder. Then you will find the template in your Character Object template drop-down.

Thanks. I briefly tried it but the skin weights needed a lot of work so I didn’t get to really test it as I had some client projects to get to. Cheers.
Heya. Thanks for the Character template and tutorial. I was curious, to make this an even more streamlined workflow, could you not have the character rig automatically constrained to the NImate nulls because they are named the same ? Using some xpresso or coffee script? That would be awesome!

Unfortunately I really want to use this with a mesh/skin and I’ve been having a LOT of trouble getting it to look ok. Crazy problems with the deformation. I’m guessing this might be just a problem with nimate and cinema 4d, but I really don’t have a ton of experience with c4d so I’m not sure

Hi Anders — I’ve seen your comments on several other forums regarding the problems you’re having, and I’m having the exact same issues. It’s troublesome, because I’ve got a project that NI Mate would be ideal for, if only the rotational data was getting transferred to the nulls, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. If you come across any solutions, I’d love to hear about it — and if I come up with anything, I’ll try to let you know, too.
